Self-Ligating Braces

Self-ligating braces are made from the same materials as traditional braces; however, self-ligating braces do not require the use of elastics, meaning fewer appointments and less friction being placed on the tooth.

Self-ligating braces come with traditional metal, ceramic, or clear brackets. They are the same size as metal braces, but with more options they can provide a more aesthetic appearance, particularly for adult patients.

How?
do self-ligating braces work?

Self-ligating braces use a specialized clip in place of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth into place. The clip helps reduce the amount of pressure being placed on the tooth, and decreases the number of adjustments because there are no elastics to replace.

There are two types of self-ligating brackets

  • Passive brackets use a smaller archwire that creates less friction and allows teeth to move more freely. Passive brackets are often used at the beginning of treatment to help the teeth start moving into position.

  • Active brackets use a much thicker archwire that delivers greater pressure to the teeth and more aggressively moves them into position. The active brackets also offer more control for consistent, strong results.

Self-ligating braces are a great option for patients needing braces. Your orthodontist can help you determine what type of braces will be most effective for your smile. Please contact our practice to schedule your orthodontic consultation.

What are self-ligating braces?

Self-ligating braces use a specialized clip instead of elastics to help the archwire guide teeth into place. They reduce pressure and friction on the tooth and need fewer adjustments because there are no elastics to replace. They come with metal, ceramic or clear brackets and are the same size as metal braces.

What is the difference between passive and active self-ligating brackets?

Passive brackets use a smaller archwire that creates less friction and lets teeth move freely, so they are often used at the start of treatment. Active brackets use a much thicker archwire that delivers greater pressure and offers more control for consistent, strong results.

Are self-ligating braces more comfortable?

Many patients find self-ligating braces comfortable because they are designed to use light, gentle force and have no elastic ties pulling on the wire. You may feel some soreness after placement or adjustments. Comfort varies, so your orthodontist can explain what to expect for your own treatment.

Are self-ligating braces easier to clean?

Because self-ligating brackets do not use elastic or wire ties, there are fewer places for food and plaque to collect around each bracket. You still need to brush after meals and floss daily to keep your teeth healthy. Your orthodontist will show you the best cleaning technique.

What is the difference between braces and Invisalign?
